About the Project

My artistic process has lead me to a very personal investigation, using the process of inhabiting as a way to understand my parents' immigrant experience and my own immigrant experience as it relates to the interaction between sites in Guadalajara and Los Angeles and the notion of home.

My father mentally inhabited two sites in Guadalajara while living in Los Angeles. One was an empty lot where he would eventually build our family's house, and the other was Mansion Magnolia where he envisioned himself working. These two sites created for him, and by extension for me during my childhood, an ever-present feeling that Los Angeles was a temporary situation. I have felt the coexistence of these spaces throughout my life. Guadalajara and Los Angeles as cities have been in constant dialogue through memory and the idea of home. This conversation between sites focuses on specific houses and their roles. It is this need to know these other sites in Mexico that has lead me to take residence here in order to inhabit Mansion Magnolia in a very real and very tactile way.

Sobre el Proyecto

Mi proceso artístico me ha llevado a una investigación muy personal, utilizando la acción de habitar como una forma de entender la experiencia inmigrante propia y de mis padres. Como también la observación de interacción inmigrante entre los sitios de Guadalajara, México y Los Angeles, California como concepción de hogar.

Mi padre mentalmente habitaba en dos sitios en Guadalajara, mientras vivía físicamente en Los Angeles. Uno de ellos era un terreno vacante donde se construiría la casa familiar y el otro era Mansión Magnolia, donde se imaginó así mismo trabajando. Lugares creados e idealizados por èl que permanecieron presentes extendiéndose durante mi infancia, esta sensación reflejó una permanencia temporal en la ciudad de Los Angeles.

La coexistencia entre las ciudades de Guadalajara y Los Angeles a sido un diálogo constante a través de mis memorias y la idea de hogar. Esta conversación entre estos dos espacios se centran en su funcionamiento de casas específicas. Para comprender mejor este diálogo que sentí por muchos años, quise experimentar, sentir de una manera viva y real llevando a cabo una residencia artística directamente en Mansión Magnolias. Decidí iniciar este proyecto dándome un periodo de tres meses. Mi objetivo es el habitarla y al mismo tiempo será parte de mi taller y estudio. Registraré toda actividad durante mi estancia y trabajo que se incorporará a la obra final de Arte.

Beginning the Project

I began the project by giving myself an extended time frame of three months. I would live in Mansion Magnolia, viewing the house as a studio. All occurrences within the space would be incorporated into the work. Mansion Magnolia is a neoclassical style residence built in the late 1890's. My grandmother's aunts known as “Las Tias” were the last inhabitants to live in the house until now. On the walls are portraits of them, their brothers, their father and their mother. Some of the original furniture and paintings are still here. Mansion Magnolia is currently used as an event space and business and not a residence. There are constant weddings and quinceaneras held on site and the house has a working staff. Most of the private rooms are being used as my cousins' law offices. Due to my residence, a room and a bathroom were prepared for me to live in.

I have created wall drawings on canvas and three groupings of photographic works. I have also began to program events that will happen within the house that take the form of artistic actions housed within my project. I incorporate the scheduled weddings and quincieaneras as part of the work and document my presence at these events, often being an awkward presence at someone's party. Through these artistic investigations, the idea of spaces housed within one another has began to emerge. A once private space houses a semi-public events venue, which also houses a private living space. A parallel between family history's also occurs as I connect with the women who once lived and inhabited the space through my own experience of living here. The events that I am planning with other local artists continue this investigation of spaces cradled within spaces and the making of artworks within artworks.

Comenzando el Proyecto

Mansión Magnolias, tiene una arquitectura neoclásica. Su periodo de construcción fue en la década de 1890's. Mis tías bisabuelas noventagenarias, cuatro de ellas fueron las últimas habitantes en esta mansión dejando de existir aproximadamente en el año de (1983). Recordándolas como mis "Tías". Actualmente la casa está al cuidado de mi Tía Linda, que ha mantenido la casa de la mejor manera posible para un continuo uso. Conservando retratos de la familia, porta retratos individuales de las Tías, pinturas de su colección como también algunos de sus muebles de uso personal. Mansión Magnolias se utiliza actualmente como un espacio para eventos y negocios y no una residencia como lo fue en el pasado. Algunas de las recámaras son utilizadas como oficinas de abogados. Se ha preparado para mi, una de las habitaciones, que utilizaré para experimentar el sentido de habitar esta entidad.

Mi proyecto artístico se manifestará en dibujo sobre lienzo, fotografías, documentación y presencia en eventos e interacción y actividades con artistas locales incorporando estas formas y medios de Arte dentro de mi proyecto. A través de estas investigaciones artísticas, la idea de espacios alojados uno dentro del otro ha comenzado a emerger. Un espacio, una vez familiar y privado alberga un recinto de eventos semi-publicos. Mi conexión experimentada personalmente creará un paralelo entre la historia de las mujeres que alguna vez vivieron y habitaron este mismo espacio y mis investigaciones de los espacios acunados dentro de los espacios. Resumiendo mi idea será obras de Arte dentro de una obra de Arte.

Architectural Mantas

I began to work with my bedroom as a material, using my fathers' architectural drawings as a starting point to explore the memory of these spaces in contrast to the actual site. My father studied architecture in Guadalajara. He would often draw architectural drawings of the houses he wanted to build. I held on to these drawings because they were a visual representation of the abstract spaces that he longed for. The drawings are very simple watercolors showing large color blocks, lines, and geometric patterns. I covered the walls and the floor of my bedroom with a thin cotton cloth known as manta. The manta spans from the bottom of the ceiling’s painted trim to the floor. The color blocks are a result of both the architecture and the furnishings in the room. The color has a watercolor wash effect inspired by my fathers early structural drawings. These wall hangings are connected to the remembrance of place. The cotton cloth shrinks due to the wash application shifting the exact placement of the object. The intention was always to eventually separate the wall hangings from the room, allowing me to take a visual representation of Magnolia with me to Los Angeles.

Mantas Arquitectónicas

Empecé a trabajar con mi dormitorio como un material, utilizando los planos arquitectónicos de mi padre como punto de partida para explorar el concepto de la memoria entre sitios. Mi padre estudió arquitectura en Guadalajara. Solía dibujar planos arquitectónicos de las casas que quería construir. Estos dibujos han sido una representación visual de los espacios abstractos que el anhelaba. Los dibujos son acuarelas muy simples que muestran grandes bloques de color , líneas y patrones geométricos. Diside cubrir las paredes y el piso de mi recamara con un paño de algodón fino conocido como manta. La manta se extiende desde la parte inferior de la moldura pintada del techo hasta el piso. El color aplicado al estilo acuarela sobre manta hace referencia ha la posición del mobiliario actual. Sirviendo para conectar lo existente con la memoria. La reducción de la manta debido a la aplicación del lavado da por resultado la variación de la posición exacta del objeto. Esta instalación se separara del sito eventualmente y existirá en una manera parecida a los dibujos arquitectónicos de mi padre.

Inhabiting

I have been documenting my residence at Mansion Magnolia through photography and the process has lead to three distinct but related photographic inquiries. The first group of photographs documents the act of living within the space in a series of cropped images of my personal things such as my soap, my toothbrush and other items such as towels. These items coexist with the antique elements and the evident wear and tear of the place. The documentation also shows the changes that I make to the site in the process of treating my room as a studio. With these photographic works, I came to understand that the very process of living here was the artwork itself and that all the other elements would grow out of this action.

Habitar

He estado documentando mi residencia en Mansion Magnolia a través de la fotografía, el proceso me a guiado a tres diferentes investigaciones. El primer grupo de fotografías documentadas será el acto de vivir dentro del espacio, tomando acercamientos de imágenes como mi jabón, cepillo de dientes, y otros artículos personales. Estos elementos coexistirán con los elementos antiguos y deterioro evidente del lugar.

La documentación me muestra los cambios evidentes en la transformación de mi habitación a estudio de trabajo. Este grupo de fotografías tomadas, llego al entendimiento que el proceso de estar habitando es en sí la obra de Arte y otros elementos enriquecerán y se adjuntarán por esta acción.

"Las Tias"

The second grouping of photographs has developed as I connect with and begin to understand the isolated lives of “Las Tias”. Through the act of inhabiting, I have come to understand the architecture of this structure as an isolating force. The high walls and thick rock of the structure separate one from the city. Mansion Magnolia which is situated within the core of the city feels like an isolated island. Its design had a very specific relationship to women and was meant to separate them from the street which was the realm of men. Through my constant interaction with both the portraits of my past relatives and by living within this isolating structure, I have developed a series of photographs that express the idea of women housed within each other's presence. I become the house and I become the past inhabitants while simultaneously discovering and interacting with the space. These blurred nudes express the process of layering histories of women. I use my own body like a gesture that interacts with the patterns and textures of the floors and walls. My skin, through photography, becomes a painted stroke upon the structure which houses it. I feel that these photographs capture myself and the other women/ past inhabitants simultaneously and our identity is woven between us as women and the structure housing us.

"Las Tias"

La segunda agrupación de fotografías es la conexión que a emergido y el entendimiento de la vida aislada que tubieron "Las Tías". Ejerciendo el acto de habitar y conocer la estructura arquitectónica de este sitio he experimentado una fuerza de aislamiento. Los muros altos y gruesos contribuyen al aislamiento entre el sitio mismo y la ciudad. Mansión Magnolia esta ubicada en el cuadro central de la ciudad, dándole la sensación de una Isla aislada. Se puede interpretar como un diseño específico dirigido a las mujeres separándolas del dominio masculino, afuera en la calle.

Mediante la constante interaxion de las fotografías de mis antepasados y viviendo día a día este aislamiento dentro de esta casa, he creado una serie de piezas fotográficas que expresan la idea de la sensación de las mujeres que habitaron este recinto y mi sensación actual entrelazandose conjuntamente. Yo me convierto en la casa, me convierto en los anteriores habitantes descubriendo al mismo tiempo fusionarme con el espacio.

The Events

The third grouping consists of the life of Mansion Magnolia as a place for events, and documents my interaction and relationship to these moments of semi-public use. The use and wear-and tear on this once residential turned commercial space is concentrated into the idea of the event. Each event brings new materials, decorative elements, sounds and people into my place of residence. There is an element of the residential structure housing the semi-public events, which in turn houses my private living space. This relationship between public and private and between the adaptation of the residential into the commercial and back into the residential has become an expression of my parents and of my own immigrant experience as we have adapted and changed to live our lives with multiple cultural influences housed within one another. This connection between Mansion Magnolia and its transformations and between my family and our adaptations has become an area of interest in my investigations in relationship to identity. The overall notion of cradling identities and functions as related to site and to histories has become of great interest to me within this project. I am creating my own events that will be works within my piece, through the process of inviting artists and through shifting the use of the space consistently between public and back to private through these interventions.

Eventos

El tercer grupo consiste en el papel que desempeña actualmente Mansion Magnolia como un lugar para eventos. Documentando personalmente con mi participacion en esos momentos semi-publicos. El uso de una casa de eventos se concentra en momentos de usos extremos que son muy diferentes al uso diario de una vivienda. El uso cotidiano en comparacion al uso publico y las adaptaciones hechas a Mansion Magnolia para funcionar como casa de eventos ahora a creado una relacion para mi, entre la experiencia immigrante y los ajustes que el individuo tiene que hacer para sobrevivir y adaptarse a situaciaon que cambian en su vida. Estos ajustes entre privado y publico, y entre las culturas de Guadalajara y Los Angeles, forman la identidad de mis padres y mi identidad propia.
